I announce that yesterday I have started writing a booklet on Alexander the Great. It wasn’t planned because I was already reading something else for another future book, but the idea was sudden, it was born almost out of curiosity and now I want to see if I can do it. It’s a project that won’t keep me busy for too long, about a month, but in the meantime any excuse is valid to do research on Alexander the Great. I don’t know what will come of it and if it will ever be published but, in the meantime, I read and write about him!
Today, however, I’m writing to you because yesterday I discovered a Spanish book on social media that came out at the beginning of the year, which I didn’t know but which interests me a lot.

Las dos obras que integran este libro, Vida y hazañas de Alejandro Magno y Nacimiento, hazañas y muerte de Alejandro de Macedonia, se sitúan entre la biografía, la leyenda y la historia del gran conquistador del Oriente, pero son de estilos muy distintos. La primera, firmada por Pseudo Calístenes y construida con elementos heterogéneos —relato histórico, relaciones epistolares fingidas, cuentos fabulosos— es una obra miscelánea, a medio camino entre la biografía y el género novelesco, que gozó de gran éxito en la Antigüedad tardía y hasta bien entrada la Edad Media. En la segunda, de autor anónimo y basada en la primera, el relato transmitido oralmente durante siglos toma por primera vez forma impresa en la Venecia de mediados del siglo XVII, convirtiéndose en un gran éxito popular con más de cuarenta reimpresiones a lo largo de los dos siglos posteriores.
García Gual subraya en este volumen fundamental y exento de pretensiones académicas, la excepcional e imperecedera difusión del texto de Pseudo Calístenes en diversas lenguas y culturas, desde la época antigua hasta el Medievo tardío.

I’m interested for three different reasons: the first is that, even if I have already read Pseudo Callisthenes in two different translations, rereading it in a different translation will allow me to grasp new nuances and therefore it will not be a rereading in vain; the second reason is that I don’t think I have any translation of the Anonymous author’s book and therefore it is a must-read; third and final reason, given the centrality of the texts, the apparatus of notes and the texts attached to the translation are important readings for understanding Alexander the Great. The price of the paperback is normal and accessible to everyone, so I don’t have an excuse not to get it.
