Happy Sunday and good morning everyone, I’m Elena. Thank you for being on Alessandro III di Macedonia, the resource on Alexander the Great and Hellenism. I’ve been away from the site lately, and in fact, it’s been a while since I’ve updated it. It was and still is a difficult time. I still have some reviews of books I’ve read to publish, and I’ll do it as soon as possible. From a reading perspective is a time of change too, because I’m switching to digital, and I’m torn because I’m attached to my collection of books on Alexander. Although I haven’t updated the site that much, I continue to deal with Alexander on a daily basis, always doing a little research and looking for new information. Today I’m going to tell you about a release from a few days ago that I discovered and is worth buying and reading.
Alexander the Evil. Resistance and opposition to the macedonian rulein the ancient iranian world: witnesses, memories and impacts
by Lorenzo Paoletti
Mimesis Edizioni, 2025

Alexander is the most celebrated figure in Classical Antiquity and lends himself to multiple readings. Due to his fortune, he has often been celebrated in both Western and Eastern traditions as an extraordinary creator of a new world that united Europe and Asia. This study aims to investigate the perception and representation of Alexander and his successors in the pre-Islamic Iranian world. The intent is to provide a different reading of a historical event, the Macedonian conquest of the Persian empire, that is fundamental to the definition of relations between East and West. By analysing the reception of a myth-historical figure in a context different from that of the West, this book aims to actualise the research on Alexander and his fortune.
Lorenzo Paoletti (1994) studied Ancient History and Oriental Studies at University of Bologna. He recently obtained a PhD (2023) and held a Postdoc (2024-2025) at the University of Cologne. His research interests include the Hellenistic Near East, Ancient Iran, and Greek Epigraphy.
