Happy Sunday, I’m Elena from Italy and thanks to be here on Alessandro III di Macedonia -your source on Alexander the Great and Hellenism! Today I’m announcing an interesting book released a few days ago:
The Army of Alexander the Great
by Richard Taylor
Helion & Company
Date of Publication : 26th April 2025

The Army of Alexander the Great provides a comprehensive account of the army with which Alexander conquered the Persian Empire. It details the organisation, equipment, appearance, drill and tactics of the core Macedonian units, the Greek and Balkan allies and mercenaries, and the Asian subjects of the Alexandrian army.
Initial chapters cover the main components of the army, with particular emphasis on the pike-armed phalanx that formed the core of all Macedonian armies. But Alexander’s army was a balanced, combined arms force, and the importance of the supporting units of light infantry and cavalry, many supplied by Macedon’s subject states and allies, is also emphasised.
Subsequent chapters examine the army in action, covering subjects ranging from pay and terms of service to march rates and intelligence. Finally, there is an analysis of each of the major battles fought by the Army, allowing its tactics to be seen in context.
The comprehensive text is supported by illustrations of ancient art and artefacts, along with campaign and battle maps and diagrams, and specially-commissioned artwork. Informed by the latest scholarly research and including detailed references to the ancient sources, but written to be accessible by the general reader, The Army of Alexander the Great is an invaluable resource for all those with an interest in ancient military history.
Richard Taylor holds a doctorate in Ancient History from Oxford University, and is the author of The Macedonian Phalanx and The Greek Hoplite Phalanx. He has worked in publishing and IT and is now an independent researcher specialising in the military history of Classical Greece and the Hellenistic world.
Renato Dalmaso was born in Sao Paulo in 1981, where he currently lives with his wife and daughter. Self-taught in drawing and painting, he began his career in illustration at the age of 37, after deciding to change his professional path. Today he illustrates for several publishers in Brazil and around the world. He has been contributing his illustrations and covers to Helion & Company since 2021. In Brazil, he illustrated several graphic novels, such as Elisio, A Journey To Hell and Jambocks!, about the participation of the Expeditionary Force and the Brazilian Air Force in World War II. He also illustrated comic books about soccer, telling the story of the Sao Paulo FC and CR Flamengo clubs. In parallel with his work as a book illustrator, he is working on developing his new comic book series, which will tell the story of the Portuguese Great Navigations in the 16th century.
