Happy Sunday, I’m Elena and thanks to be here on Alessandro III di Macedonia – your source about Alexander the Great and Hellenism! Today I’m sharing with you a new English publication of essays:
Diodorus Siculus and the Successors of Alexander
Selected Studies by Franca Landucci
by Monica D’Agostini and Eloisa Paganoni (Editors)
Edizioni dell’Orso, 2024

This volume presents English translations of three essays by Franca Landucci on Diodorus and the Diadochi. The first essay, published in the introductory volume to the commentary on Diodorus, discusses modern views on two issues concerning the Historical Library: Diodorus’ sources for the chronological structure of his account, and the nature of the opening proem and the proems introducing each Book. The other two contributions are introductory essays to the commentaries on Books 18-20. The studies provide an analytical overview of Diodorus’ narrative, highlighting its key moments and features, and outlining his view of the Age of the Diadochi. They analyze Diodorus’ relationship with his sources and reassess the much-debated issue of the chronology of the years 323-302 BC.
These essays represent a significant advancement in the understanding of Diodorus’ narrative of the Diadochi. They are relevant to scholars interested in Diodorus and the historiography on the Hellenistic period, as well as those interested in the Age of Alexander and his Successors. By emphasizing the inseparable connection between historiography and history, between politics and narrative, the essays demonstrate Landucci’s broad expertise in the Hellenistic period and her significant contribution to the research in this field.
