A new self-published book came out “The House of Argead. Rise of Macedon” by Antonios Valamontes but… read the article

Good day everyone, I’m Elena and thanks to be here on Alessandro III di Macedonia- website about Alexander the Great and Hellenism. Today I’m in a bad mood because other people keep getting in my way instead of just supporting me. Even thanking every now and then for all the work I do here is unthinkable, it’s all taken for granted and indeed sometimes some write to me on social media as if I were the editor’s secretary on duty, asking me things without even the slightest politeness. But my mood isn’t bad because of this, because this thing with the site and social media has always happened, I’m down in the dumps because my dream of going to Naples risks going up in smoke. In any case, I’m writing to notify you of the release of a book which, however, I have serious doubts about:

The House of Argead. Rise of Macedon

by Antonios Valamontes

Independently Published, 2023

The Argead Dynasty, from approximately 700 to 311 BC, holds a prominent place in the annals of ancient Macedonia. Under their leadership, the Macedonian kingdom was established and gradually rose to prominence, exerting its influence throughout Greece and beyond. The origins of the Argead Dynasty can be traced back to Perdiccas I, the dynasty’s founder. Around 700 BC, he led the Macedonians on an eastward migration from their original homeland along the Haliacmon River. This bold move allowed the Macedonians to establish a new capital at Aegae, known today as Edessa. The Argeads laid the foundation for their kingdom’s growth and expansion from this strategic location.
As the years passed, subsequent Argead rulers continued to strengthen and consolidate Macedonian control over the region. However, it was under the rule of Philip II, who ascended to the throne in 359 BC, that the Macedonian kingdom truly flourished. Philip II implemented crucial military reforms, developed advanced tactics, and modernized the Macedonian army. transforming it into a formidable fighting force.

It seems strange to me that the paperback edition costs twice as much as the hardback, it should be the other way around, right? And what justifies the high price, the presence of color images? It’s not written. The author has already written a few self-published books and seems to have undertaken this endeavor of writing the history of the Argeads. But to charge so dearly, frankly, is too much. I tried to contact the author asking for explanations but he didn’t even read the message, but if I’ll have more information I’ll update the article.

Anyone who is a practical minimum of the costs of self-publishing with Amazon knows that the price of the paperback could have been a fifth of the price but what I wonder is what justified such a high price: years of study and research on books such as Die Argeaden: Geschichte Makedoniens bis zum Zeitalter Alexanders des Großen by Sabine Müller, in German, but which at this point costs little more than Valamontes’ book but is signed by a researcher who should be known to all Alexander the Great enthusiasts.

This book is too expensive, even for who wants to read everything about Alexander like me, because you can’t justify the price and the total absence of information about it, even the preview usually available on Amazon is missing this time. It seems to me just one of many books about Alexander the Great. At this price you can find books published by academic publishers and written by researchers! I could be wrong because I know as much as you do and I’m ready to change my opinion, but it seems like too much.

I don’t feel like recommending this much too expensive read. I’m ready to change my mind and change what I wrote but I need to know more to do so.

Good day everyone,
