Provenance: Royal Collection
This is a preparatory oil sketch for a painting commissioned by Philip V for the “Salón de las Empresas del Rey” in the palace of La Granja (Segovia). The decorative scheme comprised large-scale canvases by French and Italian artists that depicted scenes from the life of Alexander, a frequently used model of royal virtues. Here the Emperor is offering a sacrifice in the Temple as a mark of respect for the Jewish religion.
